Indi Mortgage Application
Octave — Product, 2022–2023

Indi is a challenger brand bringing a fresh approach to New Zealand’s big-bank-dominated mortgage market. Their point of difference is they are not a bank — they are independent. By cutting out the overheads and profits you are paying for with big banks, they can offer a floating rate lower than the average big bank fixed rate.

The most important part of Indi’s offering was the online mortgage application process. They challenged us to create a process that is so easy they would never require a customer support team and it could be completed by new customers in under 30 minutes.

As lead designer I worked with Indi’s mortgage experts to stream line this process through journey mapping, flow maps, concepting, wireframing, user testing, user interface concepts and finally bringing that work together to form a design system that can be built on in the future.

Our first task was to work closely with the Indi team to put together a set of requirements for the application process so we could begin to understand their needs, form a project road map and prioritise features for the first release of the application process.

Next steps were to create a top level journey map of how the application process could work, where sections of questions would sit and where 3rd party integrations would connect into the process.

After that we set out designing the entire process using a lo-fi wireframe system we had created, that we would use for testing flows with users with later on, to work through the application process journey in detail. It was very important the wireframe journeys were clear, well annotated and took into consideration all possibilities since the clients external development team were delivering this product.

Since Indi was a new brand, we worked in consultation with the brand agency to create a visual direction for their digital brand and UI, designing a few key pages across various screen sizes.

Once this was approved, we created a UI design system that we could use to maintain design consistency across the product as we designed the necessary screens for delivery.

Time was taken to ensure this system was future proof and would allow the Indi team internally to continue creating any new pages they might need going forward.

This project has yet to be released into the wild under the Indi name, however it has already been picked up as a white label product by banks in New Zealand to strengthen and streamline their online mortgage offerings.
